Book Club News 2010-2011
October 15, 2010
Greetings Book Club Members:
We have had an exciting start to our book club year. In September, members learned about the changes to the book club, learned more about each other and met the book club leaders from the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Epsilon Chi Chapter. We also launched balloons with the name of our book club attached in hopes that those who find our balloons will be inspired to join us.
At our October meeting, we celebrated Afro-Latino heritage and welcomed two wonderful guest speakers who discussed Latino culture, language and music. We viewed a video clip of a musical performance by the incomparable Celia Cruz and learned a great deal about Latin performers who played with Cruz, such as Tito Puente and Johnny Pacheco. Afterwards, members rolled up their sleeves and made guacamole, a tasty avocado based dip that originated from Mexico. Many thanks to the Xinos and Kudos youth groups for their assistance!
Readings:
Grades 5 - 8 are to complete readings from The House on Mango Street: A Rice Sandwich and Read My Name. Choose one other reading from the book that is of interest. After the readings: create your scrapbook page regarding a subject from the book that speaks to you.
Next Book Club Meeting: Saturday, November 6, 2010
November is "Be an Author!" month. We will be welcoming children's book author, Gavin Curtis who will tell us about his book and share his thoughts regarding becoming an author. After our visit, we will break into groups for reading and projects.
Remember that meetings start promptly at 4pm. We look forward to exploring books with you on November 6th.
Sincerely,
The Coretta Scott King Book Club Committee
